During Baba's explanations, Mohan, who enjoyed debating about philosophy (often with Baba), asked about depending on oneself, being self-supporting and financially independent. Baba replied:

In the world, everyone has to depend on each other for one thing or another, so much so that even to breathe we have to depend on certain powers of nature. The things that you consider great and essential for spiritual progress are the very things that we [Masters] consider harmful. They are likely to be a hindrance and the cause of your regression not advancement. It is for this reason that we don't allow you to go in for such [monetary] affairs, nor do we [Masters] ourselves pay attention to them. Under these circumstances, the best possible thing is to depend upon the One who does not depend on anyone or anything!
